New Study Shows Improved Rehab Outcomes for Persons Living with Dementia
January 30, 2020
Oakmont, PA, January 30, 2020 – Today the Dementia Care and Rehabilitation Centers of Excellence of Presbyterian SeniorCare Network announced positive findings from their joint efforts in the study, “Rehabilitation of persons with dementia: using technology to improve participation.” The study shows that persons living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can achieve positive outcomes through rehabilitation therapies that utilize the “It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L) interactive technology platform.
World-renown gerontology expert, Steven Zarit, PhD, who oversaw the study, noted, “Therapeutic benefits are achievable in persons living with dementia when innovative techniques such as iN2L are used by rehabilitation teams with deep knowledge and ongoing education in dementia care.”
The Presbyterian SeniorCare Network dementia care model is based upon a person-centered approach. “It begins with our physical and occupational therapists identifying a patient’s interests,” said Carrie Chiusano, Dementia Care Center of Excellence Executive Director. “Using the vast array of stimuli available on the iN2L, our therapists customize what each patient sees, hears and experiences as a way to enhance engagement in the therapy session.”
Historically, rehabilitation among persons living with dementia has proven challenging. Although lack of engagement can be an issue for any patient, it is more common among persons living with dementia. This study demonstrates the benefits of incorporating new technology such as the iN2L to enhance and improve outcomes. Better functioning helps to reinvigorate engagement and improve quality of life.
“The findings from this study confirm what our interactive technology platform set out to achieve in terms of enhancing care,” added Chris Krause, director of rehabilitation for iN2L. “The use of the iN2L in rehab care plans not only provides good, functional content for each individual who engages with it, but also contributes to the desired outcomes.”
